Short Huayhuash Trek

The Short Huayhuash Trek begins with a private transfer south from Huaraz at 10,170 ft toward the archaeological complex of Huánuco Pampa, located at approximately 12,260 ft. Upon arrival, a guided visit introduces travelers to the significance of this former Inca administrative center and its role within the Qhapaq Ñan network. The first night is spent camping near the site, allowing gradual acclimatization while immersed in history.

After breakfast, we continue by vehicle toward Queropalca, a journey of roughly five hours through highland landscapes. From here, trekking begins toward Carhuacocha at 13,620 ft. The trail gradually reveals one of the most iconic viewpoints of the Cordillera Huayhuash, with impressive views of Jirishanca and Siula Grande. Camping beside the lake marks one of the most memorable nights of the Short Huayhuash Trek.

Today presents one of the most demanding sections of the Short Huayhuash Trek. The ascent from Carhuacocha leads to Siula Pass at approximately 16,080 ft. From the top, panoramic views stretch across glaciers and rugged peaks. After crossing the pass, the trail descends toward the Huayhuash area at 14,110 ft, where camp is established in a remote high altitude valley.

Continuing deeper into the range, we cross Trapecio Pass at roughly 15,750 ft. This section offers a unique perspective of the surrounding geography, with sharp ridgelines and open alpine terrain. The descent leads to the Elefante campsite at 14,440 ft, a protected area surrounded by rocky formations. This quieter section reinforces the sense of isolation that defines the Short Huayhuash Trek.

A long descent brings us to the village of Huayllapa at approximately 12,140 ft. Here, trekkers have the opportunity to interact with local residents and experience daily Andean life. After a break, the route climbs steadily toward Huatiac at 14,440 ft. This dramatic elevation change is physically demanding and highlights the varied terrain of the Short Huayhuash Trek.

This day crosses two high passes in succession. Tapush Pass at 15,580 ft and Yaucha Pass at 15,750 ft open wide views before the trail descends to Jahuacocha at 13,780 ft. This lake is often considered the visual climax of the Short Huayhuash Trek, with calm waters reflecting surrounding snow covered peaks.

On the final day, the route ascends to Rondoy Pass at approximately 15,580 ft. This last effort rewards trekkers with clear views of Rondoy and Jirishanca. After descending, the trail connects with transportation for the return journey to Huaraz, concluding the Short Huayhuash Trek.
