Huayhuash Complete Circuit

The Huayhuash Complete Circuit begins with a private transfer from Huaraz at 10,170 ft toward the eastern trailhead at Cuartelhuain, located at 13,780 ft. During the drive, the landscape gradually transitions from cultivated valleys to high altitude puna terrain. This first afternoon includes a gentle walk near camp, allowing the body to begin adapting to the elevation. Overnight at Cuartelhuain.

We begin ascending toward Cacanan Pass at 15,420 ft, where wide views open across the Huayhuash range. From the pass, the scale of the Huayhuash Complete Circuit becomes clear, with snow covered peaks dominating the horizon. A steady descent leads to Mitucocha, where camp is set beside a clear alpine lake surrounded by mountain walls.

Today’s route climbs to Carhuac Pass at 15,420 ft before descending to the legendary Carhuacocha campsite. This area is considered one of the most scenic locations of the Huayhuash Complete Circuit, offering direct views of Siula Grande, Jurao, and Carnicero. The reflections at sunset make this a favorite stop for photographers.

The trail climbs steadily toward Siula Pass at 16,080 ft, surrounded by steep glacial faces. Reaching the pass is a major milestone on the Huayhuash Complete Circuit. After crossing, the descent leads to the remote Huayhuash community at 14,110 ft, where camp is established near local grazing lands.

A morning ascent brings us to Portachuelo Pass at 15,580 ft, followed by a descent to natural hot springs located at 14,370 ft. These mineral waters provide a welcome opportunity to relax and recover, making this day one of the most memorable on the Huayhuash Complete Circuit.

This is one of the most demanding days of the Huayhuash Complete Circuit. The ascent to Cuyoc Pass reaches approximately 16,400 ft, the highest point of the entire route. From the top, sweeping views reveal the full expanse of the range. The descent continues to the Elefante campsite, set among rugged rock formations.

We cross San Antonio Pass at roughly 16,470 ft, a high and exposed section that requires careful footing. The descent into the Cutatambo valley reinforces the sense of isolation that defines the Huayhuash Complete Circuit. Camp is established in a remote alpine basin surrounded by steep slopes.

This day is dedicated to a lighter hike to the Siula Grande base camp. Without full packs, hikers can enjoy the dramatic scenery and reflect on the famous survival story associated with this mountain. This active rest day adds depth and historical context to the Huayhuash Complete Circuit experience.

The trail descends sharply to Huayllapa at 11,810 ft, offering a glimpse of daily life in an isolated Andean village. After a break, the route climbs again toward Huatiac at 14,440 ft. This dramatic elevation change highlights the physical nature of the Huayhuash Complete Circuit.

Two high passes define today’s journey. Tapush Pass at 15,580 ft and Yaucha Pass at 15,750 ft offer expansive views before the descent to Jahuacocha at 13,780 ft. This lake is widely considered the crown jewel of the Huayhuash Complete Circuit, especially at sunset.

Travelers may choose a short hike to Cerro Amarillo for a panoramic view of the lake and surrounding peaks, or simply rest at camp. This flexible day allows time to absorb the final landscapes of the Huayhuash Complete Circuit.

The final day descends through Pampa Llamac at 14,110 ft to the village of Llamac at 10,500 ft. From here, private transport returns the group to Huaraz, marking the end of the Huayhuash Complete Circuit.
