Trekking dos Wankas Huaraz

The day begins with an early departure from Huaraz, allowing hikers to take advantage of cooler temperatures and stable morning weather conditions. A short drive brings us to the starting point near Rataquenua, where the first panoramic views of the Callejon de Huaylas appear.

From Rataquenua, the trail follows a natural ridge line with open exposure and wide views. The terrain is non technical, consisting of dirt paths and gently undulating hills. The pace remains steady to support acclimatization and comfort at altitude.

The route reaches its main highlight at the Dos Wankas viewpoint, a culturally significant site marked by large rock formations. From this point, hikers enjoy expansive views of peaks such as Huascaran, Huandoy, Chopicalqui, Vallunaraju, Ranrapalca, Palcaraju, Churup, and Huantsan. Time is allocated for rest, photography, and hydration.

After the viewpoint, the hike continues toward Chaquicocha lagoon, where a picnic style lunch is enjoyed in a quiet alpine setting. This section remains moderate and allows recovery before the final ascent.

The trail reaches its maximum elevation near 14,100 ft before descending gradually toward the community of Jancu. The descent offers changing perspectives of the valley and interaction with local rural landscapes.

A private vehicle returns the group comfortably to Huaraz in the afternoon, completing a full day of acclimatization focused hiking.
