Unlike some of the more visited destinations around Huaraz, Rocotuyoc offers a peaceful high Andean environment with turquoise glacial waters, dramatic mountain scenery and fewer visitors.

The journey begins in Huaraz and continues through the Callejón de Huaylas toward Marcará and Vicos, traditional Andean communities located on the eastern side of the valley. As the road climbs toward the upper Cordillera Blanca, the landscape changes into puna grasslands, rocky terrain and impressive snow-covered peaks.

The hike itself is short but takes place at high altitude. From the trailhead, we walk through glacial landscapes toward Laguna Rocotuyoc at approximately 4,470 m / 14,665 ft, surrounded by the impressive peaks of Paccharaju and Bayoraju. The combination of easy access, limited walking distance and spectacular mountain scenery makes Rocotuyoc an excellent acclimatization experience before longer treks and climbing programs in the Cordillera Blanca.

8:00 am. :

Departure from Huaraz

We leave Huaraz by private transportation and travel through the Callejón de Huaylas toward Marcará and Vicos. The route passes traditional Andean communities, agricultural fields and mountain landscapes before entering the higher areas of the Cordillera Blanca.

As we gain elevation, the scenery changes into open puna landscapes surrounded by glaciers and snow-covered peaks.

10:30 am. :

Arrival at Trailhead and Start of the Walk

We arrive at the starting point of the short hike toward Laguna Rocotuyoc. Although the distance is short, the route is located above 4,000 meters, so we maintain a comfortable pace to allow proper adaptation to the altitude.

The trail crosses puna vegetation, streams and rocky glacial terrain while the surrounding mountains become increasingly impressive.

Hiking Time: 45-60 minutes

11:30 am. :

Laguna Rocotuyoc

We arrive at Laguna Rocotuyoc, a peaceful turquoise glacial lake surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery. The colors of the lake change depending on sunlight and weather conditions, creating an impressive contrast with the rocky slopes and snow-covered peaks of Paccharaju and Bayoraju.

We take time to rest, enjoy the landscape, take photographs and have snacks or lunch.

12:30 pm. :

Optional Frozen Lagoon Extension

Depending on weather conditions, available time and group performance, the guide may offer an optional extension toward the nearby Frozen Lagoon.

This additional visit is not guaranteed and will only be considered when conditions are appropriate.

1:00 pm. :

Return to the Vehicle

We begin the descent through the same route toward the transportation area.

The shorter walking distance allows time to appreciate the surrounding landscapes and enjoy the final views of the upper Cordillera Blanca.

Descent Time: Approximately 30 - 45 minutes

4:30 pm. :

Return to Huaraz

We begin the return journey through Marcará and the Callejón de Huaylas. After a day surrounded by glaciers, alpine landscapes and peaceful mountain scenery, we arrive back in Huaraz during the afternoon.
