Escalador en la cumbre de Huandoy Norte

I’ve been climbing in South America for way over 10 years now. By far, Peru and the Cordillera Blanca is the place to be for high Alpine adventures.

I was lucky enough to meet up with Edwin Milla on my second outing in Huaraz and since then we’ve achieved a number of popular peaks including Pisco, Alpamayo and the Huascaran summits.

We’ve also climbed more technical summits such as South East Face Artesonraju and the North East Face of Huandoy Norte.

I’ve enjoyed a lot of success in the Cordillera Blanca and Edwin has been instrumental in this. He is a strong, safe climber and has a great support team around him regarding logistics which is instrumental to the quality service which Edwin provides. In saying all of that you still need to get yourself in shape if you want to get up and down a 6000m+ alpine summit!

I recall one season when the weather wasn’t so good in the Cordillera Blanca so we headed back to Lima and on down to Arequipa where the weather was just fine and we “bagged” a number of easier 6000m peaks – Nevado Coropuna, Nevado Ampato and Nevado Chachani. A great example of Edwin using initiative to get things done!

Further afield I’ve climbed with Edwin in the Cordillera Real of Bolivia where we’ve summited Cerro Condiriri (a fantastic outing!) as well as Nevado Illampu!

I would have no hesitation in recommending Edwin Milla to organise and guide your next adventure in Peru.

I can and have highly recommended the services of Edwin to guide in his home country of Peru. I had the distinct pleasure of being with Edwin and his team for 30 days in June and July of 2025.

Let me preface my remarks with a bit of background on myself. I am a very passionate and accomplished climber having summited highest peaks in every South American country that has the Andes. I only need to finish Aconcagua as weather prevented me from the summit. I have also climbed all of the Colorado’s 14er’s, many more than once. I just completed Manaslu in Nepal at 8163 meters, the 8th tallest mountain in the world in September of 2017. Much more technical than Everest just not as high. I used local guides in all of my climbs so my experience of quality comes with knowledge of what and what not to look for in a guide.

With the above being stated, you will not go wrong with Edwin and his team. I did an aggressive program in Peru, as I do on all of my adventures, with trekking to start and 4 successively higher peaks. These include Diablo Mudo, Pisco, Chopicalqui and Huascaran Sur. His team of porters, muleteers, cooks and asst. guides were absolutely top notch. The food, care and safety that was given could not have been better. It pays to have an internationally certified guide in these Peruvian mountains as they are not to be taken lightly.

If you just want to trek and not climb, Edwin is the firm for you as well. He will custom tailor an itinerary just to fit your needs and abilities.

I have even recommended Edwin to American guiding companies such as IMG. All of these companies get local guides to support their climbs. Most American climbers use these USA based firms, at a higher price, as they are not comfortable using a local guide. Edwin’s professionalism and team greatly surpassed my guides in Nepal, the climbing capital of the world.

Call me at my office anytime to have a chat. I can recommend guiding services in Ecuador, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Nepal and even Colorado for the class 4 peaks.

Happy Trekking and Climbing,

P.S. One other most important note. Edwin is a person of high moral fiber and character and will not lie, cheat or take shortcuts. He truly lives by the Golden Rule, “ Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”

In September 2024 my 18 years old son Maximilian and I did a marvelous climb on the Nevado Tocllaraju together with our guide Edwin Milla. The picture below shows Edwin and me on the top of the Tocllaraju.

It was a pleasure to climb with Edwin. He is a very experienced and cautious mountain guide. We felt to be in good hands during the whole expedition from base camp and back. If I ever come back to Peru to climb another of these impressive peaks I certainly will do it with Edwin again.

I contracted Andes Expeditions in August 2023 for a 3 week trekking, climbing, and archeological sites tour. In every respect I was very impressed with their services. I have climbed/trekked in the Himalaya, Tanzania, Turkey, and Canada and never been more satisfied. Everything about my Peru trip was exceptionally well planned, the services provided were done with excellence; the sites chosen were extraordinary for their beauty and isolation; the food was incredible; the hygiene standards first rate; and the guides/porter very friendly, kind, and well spoken (in multiple languages); the equipment/ gear was modern; and the memories will last a lifetime. I will most definitely choose Edwin, Marco and the Andes Expeditions team again in the future and highly recommend anyone else do the same! “

I have traveled to Peru six of the last seven years and will be returning yet again next year. My time with those I’ve trekked with from Andes Travel Expeditions has been a big highlight of my life. Somehow the team at Andes Travel Expeditions have struck a beautiful balance between being absolutely professional, while simultaneously making me feel like family. Every step of each adventure I’ve experienced in the Cordillera Blanca and Huayhuash areas of Peru have been simply outstanding. I would never trek with another company.

Traveler enjoying the Alpamayo trekking circuit with Exploria in Peru

Exploria was very professional and organized. The food was excellent, and for a 10-day trek in the mountains, they provided every comfort. The guides, cooks, and muleteers were personal and became our friends. They helped us whenever we needed it, shared their culture, and gave us a firsthand experience of Peru. I will definitely use Exploria again for my next trek!

Edwin Milla did an exceptional job as team leader and guide on this expedition. He communicated well in advance of the trip to keep us informed about the itinerary details and provide recommendations for our equipment. He organized a fantastic trip in terms of the hotels we stayed in, our bus and driver in the country, the acclimatization hikes, our muleteer team, and the camp cook. The scenery was breathtaking, and the food was outstanding; we had three course meals every day, even in this remote location in the Cordillera Blanca mountains of Peru.
