Alpamayo Climbing Expedition

Alpamayo Mountain Climbing is a technical high-altitude expedition involving glacier travel and steep snow and ice climbing. Climbers need excellent physical fitness, proper acclimatization and solid mountaineering skills.

Yes. Previous glacier and technical climbing experience is strongly recommended. Climbers should be comfortable using crampons, an ice axe, harness, ropes and other technical climbing equipment.

Yes. Proper acclimatization is essential before attempting Alpamayo. We recommend spending several days in Huaraz and completing progressive acclimatization hikes or climbs before starting the expedition.

Alpamayo reaches approximately 5,947 m / 19,511 ft above sea level in Peru’s Cordillera Blanca.

The expedition normally approaches through the Santa Cruz Valley and climbs Alpamayo via its famous Southwest Face. The exact climbing line may change depending on snow, ice and glacier conditions.

Alpamayo is famous for its almost perfect pyramid shape and dramatic ice-covered faces. Its distinctive appearance has earned it an international reputation as one of the world's most beautiful mountains, making it one of the most iconic climbing objectives in the Peruvian Andes.

The main climbing season is generally from June to September, when the Cordillera Blanca usually experiences drier and more stable mountain conditions.

Climbers need their own personal technical equipment, including appropriate mountaineering boots, crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet and suitable high-altitude clothing. A complete equipment list is provided before the expedition.
